Aphelandra squarosa 'Snowflake'
Aphelandra squarrosa 'Snowflake' is an attractive variety of the zebra plant, famous for its distinctive foliage and impressive blooms. This houseplant is particularly popular for its large, glossy dark green leaves, adorned with pronounced white veins, and for its bright yellow bracts that emerge in summer and fall.
Origin: Native to the tropical forests of Central America, particularly Brazil, Aphelandra squarrosa 'Snowflake' thrives in warm, humid environments, where it benefits from abundant, filtered light.
Growth: Aphelandra squarrosa 'Snowflake' is a relatively compact plant, usually reaching a height of around 30-40cm. It is often grown as a houseplant due to its warm, humid climate requirements, which can be difficult to maintain outdoors in colder climates.
Flowers: The inflorescences of 'Snowflake' appear as bright yellow bracts that are quite large and can last for several weeks. True flowers are small and less noticeable compared to the spectacular bracts.
Light: This variety prefers bright indirect light but can suffer if exposed to too intense direct sun, which can burn the leaves. A location near an east or west facing window is ideal.
Watering: Aphelandra squarrosa 'Snowflake' requires regular watering, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. It likes high humidity, so misting the leaves or using a humidifier can help mimic its natural environment.
Substrate: Use a well-draining potting mix, rich in organic matter. A tropical plant mix, amended with perlite or vermiculite, is ideal for ensuring good drainage while retaining necessary humidity.
Toxicity: Aphelandra squarrosa 'Snowflake' is not known to be toxic to humans or pets, but it is always advisable to keep plants out of reach of children and animals to avoid any risk.
