Coffee arabica

Coffea arabica, more commonly known as the coffee plant, is an attractive and interesting houseplant for plant lovers. Its glossy, oval green leaves, accompanied by the eventual production of small, fragrant white flowers and red fruits, make it a decorative and useful plant. The coffee plant is also famous for being the main source of coffee beans used worldwide.

Origin: Coffea arabica is native to the mountainous regions of Ethiopia and Yemen. It is cultivated in tropical areas around the world, including Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. It was one of the first coffee species to be cultivated and remains the most widely cultivated today.

Growth: Indoors, Coffea arabica is a moderate-growing plant that can reach about 1 to 2 meters in height, although it can be kept more compact by pruning. Its glossy, dark green leaves are quite large, up to 15 cm long, and grow oppositely on the stems. With proper care, the coffee plant can produce small, white, very fragrant flowers, followed by red berries, called coffee cherries, which contain the famous coffee beans.

Flowers: The flowers of Coffea arabica are small, white, and very fragrant, often compared to jasmine for their delicate aroma. They usually appear in spring or summer, in clusters in the leaf axils. After flowering, green berries develop, slowly ripening to red. These cherries contain two coffee beans each.

Light: Coffea arabica prefers bright but indirect light. A location near an east- or west-facing window is ideal for this plant. It can tolerate slightly lower light, but bright light is necessary to promote flowering and fruiting.

Watering: This plant prefers consistently moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly, ensuring that the substrate does not dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows, but ensure that the soil remains slightly moist. The coffee plant also appreciates high ambient humidity.

Substrate: Use a potting soil rich in organic matter, slightly acidic, and well-draining. A houseplant mix with perlite to improve drainage works well. This plant prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil.

Toxicity: Coffea arabica is slightly toxic to pets if they consume the leaves or coffee cherries. Unroasted coffee beans contain caffeine, which can be toxic to animals. Therefore, it is recommended to keep this plant out of reach of pets.
