Olea europaea 'Arbequina' (Olivier)

21.99 $

Olea europaea 'Arbequina', commonly known as the Arbequina olive tree, is a variety of olive tree native to Spain, particularly prized for its small olives with a sweet, fruity flavor. This tree is not only grown for its tasty fruit, but is also popular as a houseplant or patio plant for its silvery foliage, graceful habit, and symbolism of peace and longevity.

Origin: Olea europaea is native to the Mediterranean basin, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. The 'Arbequina' variety originates from Catalonia in northeastern Spain and is widely cultivated in this region for the production of high-quality olive oil.

Growth: The 'Arbequina' olive tree is a slow to moderate-growing tree, reaching up to 3 to 4 meters in height when grown in the ground, although it generally remains smaller when grown in pots. It is particularly suitable for growing in pots due to its compact size and tolerance of regular pruning. The foliage is evergreen, with elongated leaves, green above and silvery below, which give the tree an elegant appearance all year round.

Flowers: In spring, the 'Arbequina' olive tree produces small white or cream-colored flowers, grouped in clusters. Although the flowers are not particularly showy, they are followed by small olives that ripen in autumn, turning from green to black. 'Arbequina' olives are small but highly prized for their mild flavor and low bitterness, making them an excellent choice for olive oil production or direct consumption.

Light: The 'Arbequina' olive tree requires bright, direct light to thrive. Place it in a location where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, whether indoors near a south-facing window or outdoors on a patio or balcony. A lack of light can slow its growth and reduce fruit production.

Watering: Although the olive tree is drought tolerant once established, it prefers regular watering, especially during its active growth period in spring and summer. In pots, ensure the substrate is well-draining and water when the soil feels dry on the surface. In winter, reduce watering, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Substrate: Use a well-draining substrate, such as a tropical potting mix, to improve drainage. Olive trees prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can cause root rot.

Toxicity: The 'Arbequina' olive tree is non-toxic to humans and animals, making it a safe plant to grow indoors or outdoors.
