Puna sp. nova

24.99 $

Puna sp. nova represents a newly identified or not yet formally described species within the genus Puna, known for its members adapted to the arid and often extreme conditions of the South American highlands. These cacti, characterized by their compact forms and specific adaptations to harsh environments, are remarkable examples of plant resilience.

Origin: The genus Puna is indigenous to the Andean regions of South America, encompassing areas from Argentina and Chile to Peru and Bolivia. These plants are particularly adapted to survive in high altitude conditions, where they face fluctuating temperatures and intense sunlight.

Growth: Species of the genus Puna generally develop globular to slightly elongated bodies, often grouped in dense clumps. Their spines, which can vary in density and length, serve as protection against excessive solar radiation and predators.

Flowers: Punas produce colorful flowers, usually small but vivid, which contrast nicely with the green bodies and thorns of the plants. Flowering times vary, but many tend to bloom in spring or early summer.

Light: Full sun exposure is preferred, simulating the natural conditions of their native habitat. However, in areas with particularly hot summers, protection from the afternoon sun may be beneficial.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In winter, watering should be significantly reduced to mimic the arid climate and prevent rot.

Substrate: A well-draining substrate is essential, ideally a cactus mix including perlite and pumice, to promote optimal plant health and prevent root problems.

Toxicity: Like most cacti, Puna sp. nova is not known to be toxic to humans or pets. However, handling plants must be done with care to avoid injury from thorns.
